From Moniteau County Herald, May 2, 1902

"On Friday, party of young men from the Byler neighborhood went on a hunting and fishing expedition. Saturday morning young Byler, his brother Joe and Fisher went down the stream about three miles in a boat. Fisher had a Winchester and it failed to work when he wanted it to. He had he gun in his lap, and was working with the lock when it unexpectedly discharged and the bullet struck young Byler in the heart and caused death in about three minutes. Mr Byler was a young man of excellent character, good habits, and was a general favorite among old an young alike in his neighborhood.

Notes for William Henry Byler:

He is said to have been working for his older brother John when the civil war came on and he joined the Confederate Army with his brother. Also is said he died in the war. I [Roger Byler] cannot reconcile these two accounts with the date given for his death, which is after the civil war. It may be he died after the war of wounds suffered in he war. The family of Cousin Gordon Byler may have a picture of him. Gordon showed me [Roger] a picture of a nice young man and said it was of William Henry Byler, but it could have been of Uncle William Henry Byler. Gordon was not sure which William Henry Byler it was.

Notes for John Byler:

John Byler was a Captain of Mounted Gunmen in the War of 1812. He and his company were from Bedford County, Tennessee and fought in the battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. After the War of 1812, he settled in Lawrence County, Alabama and was commissioned in 1819 to build a toll road from the Tennessee River to the head of navigation on the Black Warrior, present day Tuscaloosa. This road is known throughout Alabama today as the Byler Road and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
