N. R. Johnston, farmer, Section 28, P.O. Lawler, owns 170 acres of land; was born in Venango

County, Pennsylvania, in 1833; his parents came to this state in 1854, living during the summer,

at Fort Atkinson, Winneshiek County, and in the following fall came to Chickasaw County, and

settled in this township, where his father, Hugh Johnston, entered the northwest quarter of

Section 22.

August 13, 1861, N. R. enlisted at this place, in Company I, Ninth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He

was discharged January 7, 1862, on account of disability arising from spinal trouble. He then

returned to this pace where he has since resided, and is actively engaged in farming and stock

raising. Was married in 1860 to Miss Sprouls, and their children are, William P. Johnston,

George B. Johnston, Martha Johnston, Ellen J. Johnston, Sarah E. Johnston, Nancy M. Johnston,

and Gertrude Johnston.

Mr. Johnston is a member of Lawler Lodge, I. O. O. F.

In 1820 the census shiws a boy between the ages of 1and 10 and a wife 16 -28

In the 1923 - 29 Tax Rolls of Monroe County:

In 1923, 24, 25 was shown as landowner in Monroe County, OH on R 5 T 4 S 8 with 158 acres

In 1826 and 27 he still had his 158 acres and worth $180 and one house and two cows valued at $56.

In 1828 it was spelled Sprawls. 158 acres and 1 horse and 3 cows.

In 1828 a James Sprowls appears for the first time living in Switzerland township with no land and 1 horse and 2 cow.

He was a blacksmith, and removed about 1763 , from Westfield to Granville, MA and after a residence of about 10 years, returned to Westfield whence he removed to Granville, Washington County, NY. Under Capt. James Noble he enlisted in Col. Easton's regiment, marched to Canada May 10, 1775, and continued in the service until dec 3, 1775.
